At present FIAM conserves:
- 600+ indigenous rice variety
- 12 potato variety
- 11 brinjal variety
- 5 beans variety
- 6 wheat variety
- 14 tomato variety
- Different types of vegetables, Barley
These indigenous seeds are not only the last word to be preserved, but they are also distributed among the farmers of the region where they are suitable for cultivation and when the crop is harvested, but the seeds are also stored again for the next year, to be distributed among the new farmers.
There are separate committees of experienced farmers for seed conservation and in-house organic manure production who oversee all management in direct contact with each grower. A meeting with the farmers in different units is held before each season for crop selection.
After checking the quality of the crop, it is sent to FIAM's non-toxic product marketing center "Chashi Ghar", Raiganj, Super Market. Conservation cannot sustain without consumption. And the farmer's house is fulfilling that responsibility beautifully. We have not yet received any funds from any public or private sector for the conservation of our seeds. However, the Department of Agriculture has been cooperating with the farmers to create the infrastructure for organic farming. FIAM is working in Hatia, Bhatta Dighi, Maharajpur, Abhinagar, Balia, Dashmile Bindol, Barua, Maharaja, Palaibari of Itahar block, Keotal, Kalua of Abhinagar Hematabad block, Kaliaganj, several villages of South Dinajpur of Raiganj block.
The main work of FIAM seed diversity conservation center has been started in Hatia village and also in some sand mouzas.
FIAM's various activities on sustainable agriculture and the environment are published in the "North-South" magazine. Several books and booklets have already been published on the initiative of Sudipta Mukherjee. Since agriculture is directly linked to the economy, FIAM is constantly experimenting with how to make a family prosperous and healthy through organic farming.
Seed Conservation and Seed Bank: Our first path started with seed conservation, our dream of building a seed bank through the conservation of indigenous rice varieties began. In the first year, four indigenous varieties of rice were collected and preserved, in the second year 14 varieties of paddy were cultivated. Bhairav Sahani, Soumik Banerjee and other prominent people have worked tirelessly for the development of FIAM's Seed Variety.
Dr. Anupam Paul has always been our guardian and has helped us in the work of conservation and expansion.
We are part of Bharat Beej Swaraj Manch and are connected with Seed Savers pan India.
